Abstrak

Mental disorders are the result of a long and complex psychosocial developmental process, influenced by familial, environmental, and individual social factors. Data from the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2007–2018 and the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) reveal fluctuating prevalence rates of mental disorders in Indonesia, including in Lampung Province. Schizophrenia, as a severe mental illness, along with emotional mental disorders such as stress, anxiety, and depression, remain major public health concerns. Significant challenges also persist in the form of widespread shackling practices (pasung) and limited access to mental health services. Despite relatively high administrative service coverage, the quality of care and success of long-term rehabilitation remain suboptimal. Low mental health literacy, limited healthcare resources, and inadequate facilities continue to pose significant barriers. The integration of the Mental Health Act into Health Law No. 17 of 2023 is expected to serve as a legal framework to strengthen an inclusive and sustainable mental health system. Addressing mental disorders requires a cross-sectoral approach that goes beyond curative measures to include promotive and preventive strategies, ensuring full recovery of social functioning and quality of life for patients. Strong support from families, communities, and a resilient health system is key to overcoming the burden of mental illness in Indonesia.
